Plenary Meeting of the ANMC21 in Tokyo

The Asian Network of Major Cities 21 (ANMC21) was established as a result of Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara calling upon the major cities of Asia to form a network to address common challenges. The leaders of the member cities convene a plenary meeting each year to discuss urgent issues. The upcoming meeting will be the second time for Tokyo to host the plenary, having hosted the first gathering in 2001.

Policy Dialogue“To Reduce Environmental Load in Asia’s Major Cities”
A serious problem confronting the cities of Asia is the increasing load on the environment resulting from rapid economic growth. Air and water pollution, waste disposal, and other environmental problems that need to be urgently addressed was discussed among the cities, and Tokyo shared its experiences including the initiatives it is taking to become a low carbon city.
Special Report“Promotion of Industry and New Technology Development”
To ensure the sustainable development of the Asian region, which will drive the global economy, it would be crucial to promote technological innovation and strengthen regional collaboration that goes beyond national borders.
Discussions were held on the roles that cities should play to spur on the Asian economy and the future form of collaboration between member cities.

Special features of this year’s plenary meeting

Promotion of economic exchange between Tokyo and Asia
This year’s plenary was held in connection with the “Tokyo Industry Exhibition 2010” in order to promote economic exchange between Tokyo and Asia.

ANMC21 participants had the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the technological prowess of Tokyo-based businesses

An “ANMC21 & Asia zone” was set up to provide Asian businesses with a dedicated exhibition area
An informal gathering for ANMC21 participants and members of the Tokyo business community was also held.
Presentations by corporate leaders
Each theme featured a presentation by a corporate leader, and discussions, including how to carry out public-private cooperation, was held.
